BALANCING FRIENDS AND ART IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Cricket Hatcher    Pauline Jones is our chick expert (and rabbits, horses, etc.) at the Atwoods store where we both work.  The thing she loves most about her job – it’s obvious that she loves her job – is the change. Not just the change in product, because the animals are not just a product, but the change in the customers as well. She is passionate in educating children about the animals. But she mostly adores talking to the old timers who come in the store and tell her about how they did it when they were young.  They are full of knowledge and experience. Pauline’s exuberance is contagious, and if you stick around long enough you’re sure to learn something.

The thing you might not know about Pauline is she is an amazing artist.  She recently traded an original pencil drawing for my book The Apocalypse Sucks.  I am sure I got the good end of that stick.  Her portrait of Cricket Hatcher will soon be hanging in my “writing room” over the recliner to serve as my muse.  Here is the story of Cricket as she gave it to me:

“Everyone in the small Tennessee town knew Cricket Hatcher and he kept his friends entertained daily at the local feed store.  He always wore ‘Pointer’ brand overalls and shared a bag of ‘Moore’s’ chips with Granny the resident cat.  Pointer and Moore’s were local companies from the small town and everyone was tied together by those facts.  I asked Cricket if I could do his portrait and he graciously agreed.  He passed away before he had a chance to see the finished product and Granny died within a month after Cricket from no apparent illness.  The feed store was a total loss in an electrical fire and their copy of this portrait was one of the few items that were salvaged.  I thoroughly enjoy this type of art and my greatest joy is sharing it.”

Pauline is a treasure to everyone she meets, not just in her art but as a genuine person who cares about her fellow human beings (and animals). It is my honor to work with such a person.  She helps to balance out my life.

Who is a good balance in your everyday living?

BALANCING CHRISTMAS TASKS

Christmas 2014    The stockings were hung by the chimney with care – well maybe not stockings – but tinsel and glitter anyway.  As of today, I’ve finished the Christmas shopping and wrapped the gifts.  The cards will just have to wait for now, but I’ll get to them.  I still have some Christmas goodies to make to so I’m not really done, but it helps sometimes to tell yourself you are.  It alleviates some stress.

My son volunteered his house for Christmas dinner and I’m planning to make my famous Italian Cream cake.  It was my mother-in-law’s recipe.  It is not easy to bake, so I only do it for special occasions.  Wish me luck.

When my children were young I gave them the task of wrapping the packages.  That way if the presents looked like they were wrapped by a kid, they were!  It was fun for them (I think) and took a load off me.  I put the gifts in boxes with names on them and taped them shut.  I then sat the kids, paper, bows etc. next to the tree, put on some Christmas music and began making cookie dough.  This worked when they were little.  It got everyone in the Christmas spirit and divided some of the tasks so everything was accomplished.  Some call that child labor, I called it teaching them responsibility. The dog normally got in on the frivolity – he was in charge of tearing up the cardboard tubes once it was empty of paper.  Sometimes we tried to string popcorn for the tree, but the dog thought that was to eat too.

Now that the kids are grown with their own tree to trim and it is just me and my husband, I still like to decorate a little and try to make things festive.  I’d like to find a smaller tree that isn’t so heavy going up and down the attic stairs.  I’m not as young as I used to be and can’t break any child labor laws now, but I still get a few things done.

Oh wait!  I think I forgot a present!

Merry Christmas!

BALANCING SECRETS OF SANDHILL ISLAND RELEASE DATE

SecretsofSandhillIsland_w8259    I have a release date!  My mainstream suspense novel, Secrets of Sandhill Island will be released by Wild Rose Press on January 14, 2015. I can’t wait!  I love this story of mature love and the unfolding of a life that should have been lived years ago.  Meg was a woman who hid from a world she didn’t understand and gave up trying to.  Until she met Alex.  Evan had been the love of her life.  But soon after Alex showed up, so did the blackmail letters.  Would life ever be the same again and did she really want it to?

All Evan wanted was to be with Meg.  He would provide for her and the child, or children as the years went by.  He was still unsure why she chose him – a fisherman – over anyone else in the world, but she did.  Her family didn’t like him but, they were just going to have to get used to him.

He struggled pulling the nets in alone.  The pulley did most of the work but it still would have been nice to have some help. The hair on the back of his neck stood up and he sensed the presence behind him. He turned around.  The man stood almost close enough to touch.  The dark ski mask pulled over his face sent a shiver up Evan’s spine.  Where did he come from?  But most of all, why did he hide his face out here on the open ocean? And then he saw the giant meat hook in his hand.

“Who are you and how did you get on my boat?” Evan stepped toward the intruder despite the danger.  He never expected what came next.

“This is from Graham.” The man plunged the hook deep into Evan’s chest.  Blood spurted every direction as Evan’s eyes bulged and he gasped only once.  The man in the ski mask quickly pushed him over the side into the dark, churning water.

Secrets of Sandhill Island will be available Janurary 14, 2015.  Pick up a copy and leave me a review.  I hope you enjoy it.

Bulb Balancing Christmas

amaryllis    I bought an amaryllis bulb this week.  Not a peace lily, but an amaryllis.  They are beautiful for the Christmas season with their massive red blossoms.  They lay in the box at the store with a stem extending from the bulb and blooming.  No soil, no water, not even sun for photosynthesis but they survived.  How could I go wrong?  I bought one with no blossom so I could start from scratch.

I brought it home lovingly from work in the dark and finally found a cracked pot beside the house to plant it in.  In all those flower pots beside the house not one contained any soil and it was dark, cold and drizzling heavily.  I searched with a flashlight until I was drenched.  I remembered once reading an article with instructions for growing them in a saucer with rocks and water.  I searched through the hobby cabinet and found some marbles – but no rocks. Well, marbles are similar to rocks, right?

I placed the bulb roots down on the marbles in the pot and poured water over them.  Several days went by and nothing. Then  guess what?  It’s growing! I can’t wait to see the crimson blossoms peaking out just in time for Christmas. Now all I need is some holly and I’ll be ready for the yule season.

I’ll let you know if it survives.

A BALANCED AND CLEAN THANKSGIVING

turkey    The holidays are upon us again and someone forgot to tell me.  I sit here still in my weekend bathrobe sipping tea on Sunday morning.  I have nine people coming for dinner on Thursday and I have to clean house!  But I’m not.  I’m writing a blog about what I should be doing.  I’ve got to go back to work tomorrow so this has to be done today.

I did do a little pre-Black Friday shopping yesterday but everything on my list was already gone when I got to the store at 9:00 a.m.  Gone are the days of shopping downtown the week before Christmas with snowflakes melting on your eyelashes.

But that’s Christmas.  Let’s get back to Thanksgiving.  I bought a turkey recently and it is in the freezer.  I need to get it in the frig so it can start to thaw.  I normally put it in the electric roaster overnight on Wednesday before the big meal.  So time is a wastin’.

I’ve planned the meal and handed out assignments (well dishes) to those who are coming. That sounds like I’m the Thanksgiving Czar but these people are family and as my family always does, everyone brings something.  It’s not really pot luck, it is planned.  That way we don’t just have rolls for dinner.

Noon on Thursday seems to be the consensus.  Everyone has other things to do, places to go, and other meals to attend.  So I got the noon slot.  That’s fine, I really don’t care about the time.  The important thing is seeing friends and family and spending time together.

But this house is not cleaning itself.  I need to get busy.  There are tablecloths to iron and silver to polish.  Maybe next year we’ll eat out. Or maybe I’ll just clean the living areas and ignore the bedrooms.  No one will be in there anyway unless it is to put a coat on the bed. It’s all about balance.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

BALANCING MORE PUMPKIN – FRITTERS

pumpkinfritter   Katie and I have worked together for 10 months, but she moved around in the purchasing section twice.  She now is an Assistant Buyer in the Home and Outdoor Living area. “Home” seems to be her niche.  Prior to working with me Katie was a stay at home mom where she perfected her skills as a baker. She is known for her cheesecakes, but she also makes pumpkin pies (with her own homemade pie crust).  She will even make pumpkin cheese cakes!

When asked if she prefers fresh or canned pumpkin she said “Fresh is a plus because you can adjust the flavor to your liking.”   It is also denser and has more vitamins.  You can use pumpkin in breads, muffins, and she even makes pumpkin fritters.  Here is her custom recipe.

Pumpkin Fritters

Peal the pumpkin, cut it up and boil until it is able to be mashed or pureed. Let mash cool to room temp before adding any of the following ingredients: 1 or 2 whole eggs depending on how much pumpkin you have, vanilla, sugar and pumpkin pie spices, honey if you like. Heat oil to 350-400 degrees in a deep fryer, or until a little water in about 4 inches of oil in a deep skillet pops. Add flour till you are able to pat out a couple table spoons like a sticky pancake. The final consistency should be like really, really thick mashed potatoes or thick oatmeal, and can be handled and patted out. Slowly drop them in oil and let them cook about 1 ½ minutes on each side until they are a dark orange or brown. They should have crispy outsides and warm gooey insides. Can be served warm or cold with choice of toppings. They are good as a breakfast or a desert.

I’ve seen all kinds of ways to use pumpkin this season, but this is the most inventive – not to mention delicious. Try it out and let me know what you think.  Pumpkin isn’t just for pies anymore!

BALANCING RELATIONSHIPS IN A BUSY LIFESTYLE

stones-balance-meditation-tower-stacked-free    My life would be completely out of balance without the good friends and family I have supporting me. This weekend was rich in both.

I started the weekend in the normal way; cleaning, laundry, shopping and at least this Saturday, dog bathing.  She’s a medium sized dog and not too much trouble in the tub, but it takes both me and my husband to trim her nails once a month. I finally fell in bed completely exhausted about 10:30 after quickly scanning emails.  But my chores were done and it was a long list. The clean was in balance with the dirt in just the right amount to make me happy.

That freed me up for Sunday.  My daughter and I met for a pedicure and a little “girl time.”  She brought my handsome teenaged grandson who has decided to outgrow me (physically and emotionally).  He is in high school band this year and was in need of a black suit jacket.  So, in grandmotherly fashion, I offered to buy one.  We went to the boy’s department, and it didn’t take long to determine that we should be in the men’s department where the coats fit much better. I still found one on sale and he will get a little use out of it before it miraculously morphs into a much smaller size in his closet.

After finishing up with my family I met my great friend and author, Lucie Smoker, for coffee and a little book browsing.  She is a novelist turned book reviewer and it was time for something new.  But mostly we just needed to catch up.  We don’t get enough time together.  Our personalities could not be more opposite and maybe that is why we balance each other out so beautifully.

I am always in search of balance in my life.  But the most important thing that needs to remain in balance is my relationships – and I have some of the best. The weekend was too short.

What did you do this weekend to help keep balance in your life?

BALANCING HUGE PUMPKINS IN A CLEAN KITCHEN

pumpkins   This week my husband took the week off work to hunt.  He has been at the same job for so long he has to use vacation leave or lose it.  It was too warm to hunt deer, he declared so he spent much of the week just hanging around the house.  And when he is bored, he gets into trouble.  He came home from a farmer’s with two huge pumpkins (not the little pie pumpkins).  He’s a country boy at heart trapped in the city and when he and buddy started discussing pumpkin bread, pumpkin pies, and all things pumpkin, trouble was brewing.    He had a great idea.  We’d bake and peel the pumpkins and make pumpkin bread.

“That’s a lot of work,” I said, “I normally use the canned stuff.”

“Oh, this will be better!” he exclaimed.

He worked all afternoon.  When I came home from work, the kitchen had exploded in pumpkin debris.  He stood at the sink washing each pumpkin seed by hand.  There was a giant pumpkin in the oven cut in half and baking.  One still remained on the sink top cut open and waiting its turn to be baked.  Good thing supper was waiting in the crockpot.  I cleaned up the kitchen.

The baking and pealing went on into the evening.  The next day at work I received text messages with pictures of bowls piled high with pumpkin scooped from the inside of the globe.  He complained that my blender didn’t do a good job on “puree.”

Returning home from work the second day the scent of pumpkin bread wafted from the kitchen.  The finished product.  Three loaves of warm pumpkin bread awaited me.  He did a great job.  The bread was perfect.  The kitchen, not so much.

After dinner and cleanup, I was faced with the giant bowl of pumpkin still sitting in the frig.  I lovingly scooped the mush by two cup measures into zip lock bags and froze it.  Seven of them!!!  Meanwhile he stirred and tasted the pumpkin seeds.  Two days!  He worked on three loaves of pumpkin bread for two days! I cleaned the kitchen again.

“That’s a lot of work,” he said.  pumpkin puree    Maybe next time he’ll just buy the canned type.

Remind me sometime to tell you about the buffalo he brought home.  (remember he is a hunter) – yes, that’s right.  An American Bison in my freezer.  Do you know how long it takes two people to eat a buffalo?  We won’t starve at my house.

What recipes do you have for pumpkin?  I need some new ones.  You can only eat so much pumpkin bread and pies.

AN UNBALANCED HALLOWEEN

coffin    I don’t get into Halloween that much.  I love to hand out candy in my neighborhood and see all the little ghoulies and ghosties on my front porch.  But Halloween as a holiday escapes me.

My daughter, however, says it is her favorite time of year.  I know, I know, you’re somehow blaming me thinking I did something to warp her as a child.  Maybe it was all the Stephen King books I had lying around that did it.  I think it is because she spent a lot of time on a stage as a dancer and loves to dress up.  She and some girlfriends even dressed up last year and went to a bar for The Rocky Horror Picture Show evening.  She invited me, but I declined.  I’m afraid I might not look that good at my age dressed as Susan Sarandon in a bra and half- slip.

But this year as in the past, she had a “family friendly” Halloween party at her house.  Friends brought their children and they  all dressed up including the adults.  The one person that had the most fun, I am sure, was my daughter. She decorated the house with bloody shower curtains and vampire dinners and it was warm enough that the kids played outside as much as in.  Not too scary – a good time was had by all ages.         shower curtain

With Halloween only a week away, I did a really scary thing today.  I bought candy.  Have you priced this stuff this year?!?  (Or any other year for that matter).  That’s scary enough for me. candy  I plan to order a pizza and stay home Friday night to hand out candy.  Maybe I’ll catch a horror flick on the TV while I indulge in some scary expensive Halloween candy myself.

What are you doing for Halloween?  How does your family celebrate the Day of the Dead?

UNBALANCED OVER A RELEASE DATE

beach writing    I am on the verge of a release date!  I still don’t know when, but the final galley went back to the publisher last week (one more time) and an application for a release date has been sent in.  I am assured by my wonderful editor, Ally Robertson, that The Wild Rose Press will be releasing my latest novel soon.

“Secrets of Sandhill Island” is a mainstream suspense with romantic undertones. Set on a tourist island off the coast of Corpus Christi, Meg is just beginning to find out that her life has been a lie.  It’s no wonder she has become a hermit and feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere.   Alex tries to pull her out of her shell, but the more she faces the real world, the more she finds out about her past and that of the island. “Secrets of Sandhill Island” is a great read about a mature romance and second chances.beach S Texas

My life is unbalanced again and teetering on the brink of a release date.  I can’t wait to show you the real thing!
